Fish On! March 23rd, 2012

Hit Okanagan Lake on March 23rd. Decided to fish north of Rattlesnake Island on the east side of the lake. Fished Lyman plugs at 55 and 75ft as fish were marking in this range. Trolled at various speeds from 1.3 to 2.0 MPH. I fished with a red false flasher just off the ball for about 3hrs, but pulled it off wondering if I was spooking the fish. Pulled up the riggers and headed to Seclusion Bay on the west side of the lake. Trolled a chartreuse/black Lyman at 55ft. Caught this fish at 1:30pm. Fish was released after careful revival to live another day! Calm water and blue skies made this day on the water special. Lots of boats out as the temperatures continue to warm.

Cheers,
R

Hit the water today at 9am. Slight chop on the lake over by the island. Fish sighting on the finder near the surface in 250ft of water. Decided to focus my attention up top with Bucktails and plugs. Wasn't long and I landed this beauty...

I hit the water today solo and launched at Gellatly. I cut across the lake and fished all around the white marker just north of the Island. I fished this area for about three hours trying various columns of water. Fished in tight at around a 100ft and out to about 450ft. Tried numerous Lymans, Apex's and Bucktails with no luck. I took off for Bertram area and trolled back towards the boat launch. Tried a few different Matrix lures and a Gypsy Spoon Cop Car with no takers. I tried varying speeds from 2.0 to 2.9 mph. The lake was like a sheet of glass and the sun was out all afternoon so I didn't feel like 5 hours was wasted! Water was 38.6 on the surface.

I fished all columns of water offered. I focused much of my efforts "top shelf" due to Dale Johnson's recent post. Anyways, tried a gypsy cop car upstairs, 5 different Apex's, 3 different Lyman plugs from 25ft to 60ft. I fishing back and forth from the boat launch across to East Kelowna and return. Fished for 4 hours today between 2.2 and 2.8mph with no bites. The lake was in beautiful shape all day. 40 degrees on the surface and warming up! Most of the gents I spoke with had the same kind of luck today.

It was a beautiful sunny day with no wind! We put in at Gellatly Bay and zipped straight across to fish the east side and headed towards Kelowna. We focused our efforts up top with a mix of Apex's and Lymans. 1 to 2 ounces of weight and sometimes no weight. We fished various speeds ranging fron 2.2 to 3.5. We cut back across the lake and fished the west side of the lake and made a few passes in front of Gellatly Marina. We spent 4 hours on the lake and sadly I have no fish to report. The SLUMP continiues but we have some pretty clean lures.

Tight Lines!
Robert

Even Sidney Crosby gets shutout sometimes!

Okay....so I'll admit its been a while since I posted a fishing report. I've only dipped the bow of my boat in the water twice this month and I was shutout the first time. As an angler (no matter how successful) you need to be comfortable with the idea of getting "skunked" on occasion. Learn what you can from the experience and tip your hat to the elusive fish. The key to enjoying your angling experience is realizing that it is seldom really about the fish that are caught, rather its about the great outdoor experience.

That being said....the drought is over!

April 25th, 2010

I slid the bow into the water around 5pm and by 7pm I was all smiles. Set the down-rigger at 44ft (my favorite depth after I have been skunked) and dragged a Cop-Car Coyote Gypsy spoon 3.5inches long. Bingo! Fish on....after a brief tussle with my 6500C3 (that's a hint!) she was released to fight another day. I was sailing solo...so sorry no picture. A safe estimate was that she was 2.5lbs. I have attached a picture of the magic lure for your viewing pleasure. BTW...mine was barbless...always play by the rules!

Well...we hit the water today at 11:30am and the lines were down by high noon. As I continue to work the kinks out of my new boat (not new just new to me) we decided to put in at the Westbank boat launch and head straight across the lake and fish South towards Rattlesnake Island. Turns out Rattlesnake is nearly 6 miles from where we started. We tried a variety of weapons today...blue/silver Bucktail, black/silver Bucktail, Perch Scale Apex, Perch Scale X-Rap, 3.5 inch Gypsy Cop Car upstairs with no weight, #69 5 inch Lyman (orange lightning bolt) and then the winner was chucked over the boards....a 4 inch chartreuse and black Lyman w/ a splash of sparkle flash. BAM! The reel rang out that sweet sound you pray for...I zipped to the back of the boat, grabbed the rod and set the hook. At the other end I found a scrappy chrome rainbow who was more and more resistant as she neared the boat. After a few misses and laughs with the net she was safely on board. We cleaned her up at the dock so I never weighed it but we believe it was closing in on the 4lb mark. We had the VHF radio on and it sounds like others got into fish today also. Not to shabby for early March! Big fish are on the horizon...I can feel it!

Today's Weather: +10, overcast and calm winds.

Dependable Weather....or Weather Dependant?

So I started watching the forecast 5 days out from Sunday. It looked good so I made plans to clear the schedule Sunday afternoon to splash onto Okanagan Lake. The final forecast I read for Sunday afternoon said....sunny +7 and here is the key...calm winds. I can handle the cold but wind is another story especially if you are launching your boat by yourself. So the sun and temperature lived up to the hype but the wind did not. It wasn't crazy windy but the whitecaps were enough to twist my boat around when I took my hands off the wheel to drop in my fishing line. I fished for 2 hours North of Rattlesnake Island on the East side. I fished close to the surface in 250-350 ft of water using a lyman plug and a bucktail with no luck today. I have deemed this trip a success as I haven't run my motors for a while and I was able to run some fresh gas through the lines. At least I know all systems should be a go on my next trip.

R
We hit the water at 11am and concentrated our efforts around Cresent beach North of Summerland. We were finding lots of fish on the finder when we were in 200 to 300 ft of water (most likely schools of Kokanee). The fish seemed to be in 100+ ft of water. At around 1pm we deceided to cut across to Indian Rock while I dragged a blue/white bucktail on a floating flyline with a colorado blade spinning above with green beads for extra bling! Fish on! Fish on! Fish on! My fly reel was just a screamin'...Fish off. In only a few short seconds my heart was pumping like I had just run a marathon . We fished out the day until 4pm, tried a few Apex's, Tomic's and Lyman's with no hook-ups. The sun was out and the water was calm so it was a great day. The fish gotta win once in a while :)

Robert
